Ginny Wright, Ph.D.

Certified Discernment Counselor and Clinical Psychologist

One of the hardest life decisions is: Should we get divorced or try to save our marriage? So many couples go back and forth for months, sometimes even years trying to make the right decision. Well, guess what? Did you know that there’s a process called Discernment Counseling, that is dedicated to helping you and your spouse make that decision? And, did you know there’s a wonderful therapist, who specializes in discernment counseling?

Her name is Dr. Ginny Wright, and she’s highly experienced and dedicated to the field. I have gotten to know Ginny this past year and I can see why she’s successful. Ginny’s a great listener, has so much positive energy, and is just a delightful human being!

Discernment counseling isn’t new, but it’s gained a lot of popularity recently. It’s a process for couples on the brink of divorce. The process is not marriage counseling and it’s not a long process. Discernment counseling is 1-5 sessions, where a couple works with the counselor to figure out the best road forward: get divorced, stay and work on the marriage, or take a break and decide later.

About Ginny

What is Discernment Counseling?

Discernment counseling is a new way of helping couples who are on the brink of divorce, where one person is “leaning out” of the relationship and not sure that regular marriage counseling would help. The other spouse is “leaning in” – that is, interested in rebuilding the marriage. In discernment, the counselor helps these couples decide whether to try to restore the marriage to health, move toward divorce, or take a time out and decide later.

Discernment counseling does not fix your marriage. Rather, the goal is to help couples gain clarity and confidence in their decision making about their marriage based on a deeper understanding of what has happened in the marriage and each person’s contributions to the problems.

Dr. Wright has been a clinical psychologist for over 30 years and a Certified Discernment Counselor for over five years. She is currently one of three clinicians in an advanced discernment counseling residency program with the Doherty Relationship Institute.

What people are saying about Ginny

“We had been to couples therapy twice, spending many months going in circles. Divorce papers had been filed when we decided to try discernment counseling. Dr. Wright was able to identify our key issues within the first session, and she helped each of us get more honest about what we needed to change. We decided to try reconciliation through couples therapy and we begged Dr. Wright to continue as our therapist – we knew she would push us to stay focused on the important things. It has been a rough time, but we are grateful to have Dr. Wright as our guide.”

– D.D. and R.D., 2022
